Smoothies are a great way to pack in a lot of nutrients quickly. They are perfect to start your day or to get in some quick protein after a hard workout. This is one of my all time favourite smoothies that I have been making since I was a student at university. Over the years the ingredients have made some adjustments – I’ve changed my protein powder from whey to vegan, I started adding in spinach, and I learned that freezing your bananas was essential for a thick and creamy texture (tip below on how to freeze your bananas). This smoothie is fairly sweet to begin with, but if you are feeling you require some extra sweetness in your day you can add in a date or two. I always like my smoothies as cold as possible, so ice is essential for me!
Ingredients:
1 cup water
1/2 cup almond milk
1 scoop of chocolate protein powder
Small handful of spinach
1 tablespoon all natural peanut butter
1/2 frozen banana
1 tablespoon ground flax seed
1 small date (optional)
ice (optional)
Directions:
Place all ingredients, except the ice, in a blender and blend on high until well combined. I like my smoothies extra cold so I usually add a few ice cubes and blend again. Pour into your favourite glass and top with hemp seeds or cocoa nibs for some extra texture.
Tips:
– When my fresh bananas start to get too ripe I peel them, cut them into pieces or break them in half and put them in a zip lock bag. The key is to peel the bananas first. This makes your life so much easier instead of having to peel your frozen bananas, which can be time consuming and tedious.
